Response To Reading

In reading this weeks passages in “Thinking with Type” by Ellen Lupton I found several areas of interest. My favorite passage was the section on lettering. Although typefaces in themselves can be artistic, the lettering examples for me, truly spoke to an artist. The beauty of creating type by hand creates a totally unique experience. It transcends graphic design into a true form of art. I was also really interested in the idea of hierarchy and how it applies to different media such as magazines and websites.  It was interesting to learn the role of hierarchy in search engines (how the h1 heading is displayed for search engine titles and results). I also was interested in the examples of magazine covers. The magazines designed by Dave Eggers featured little imagery, no photography and were almost exclusively done with type. However, due to the principles of hierarchy the covers are readable and aesthetically pleasing.
