Response to Reading

After reading, I thought that one of the more interesting topics was the importance of a baseline.  It is something that is generally overlooked in typography because the computer automates it, and when writing by hand it is more of an afterthought than a necessary part of writing. I was surprised at how exact it makes all of the words fit together, and how certain letters can go below it without making the text teeter in one direction or another. Because it is invisible when typing, it is normally forgotten about, however it seems to be one of the more important aspects of typography, because it holds each line on an even keel. The baseline is something that I hadn’t thought about since learning cursive, but its importance is evident after the reading.  -Mark Rubino
