Response to Reading

I found it very interesting that there is a distinction in typography between numerals. I never really thought about numerals as type, and I didn’t realize that there was a difference between numerals used in business versus numbers used in other, more artistic situations.

In my opinion, the lining numerals were much more visually appealing than the non-lining numerals both when lined up next to other numerals and when located in paragraphs. I think they look clean and easy to read when compared to non-lined numerals.

It was also interesting to me that numerals go in and out of style. For instance, lining numerals were introduced to meet the needs of modern business and were popular around the turn of the twentieth century, whereas non-lining numerals were popular in the 1990s for their idiosyncratic appearance and their resemblance to traditional typography.
